There are many causes of anxiety.
Anxiety says many things. Here are a few:
Anxiety says “What if…..?” Are you stuck in asking the “what if” questions that have no real answer to provide you with the peace you long for?
Anxiety can say, “There is danger lurking out there, and I better protect myself.” Maybe it’s a result of trauma in your life and you are constantly feeling unsafe around certain types of people or places. Your anxiety feels more like a state of being, than an occasional anxious time. You know the world is not a safe place from experience, so you limit your life because you don’t feel safe. Safety is not found in yourself, but it seems necessary. Come and know the true safety, the ever present God who is your true refuge. He will help heal your pain and enable you to find healing in him.
Anxiety can say, “I am afraid you will reject me, or not like me, so I will try to please you at all costs.” You end up losing yourself by morphing into someone you think others want you to be. Who are you? Maybe, you don’t even know. You are so used to pretending to be someone you think “they” might like, that you lose your own personality and individuality God has given you.
You wear a mask around others, always wondering, “What will they think of me?” The phrase that best describes you may be “people pleaser.” There is a way out of this that frees you to be your God-given self and to move towards people and good relationships, being who God desires you to be.
Perhaps you learned anxiety from observing how others in your home lived. Did you have an anxious parent? You learned how to worry and how to cope in unhealthy ways. There is hope for this too!
